Joel Cassara,
Executive Director
Joel has spent his life as a marine educator, dedicated to passing along his knowledge and passion for our oceans and its inhabitants. Beginning in 1993, he worked at Emerald Bay on Catalina Island as a camp educator while working his way toward a college degree. In 1999, he graduated with a B.S. in Marine Biology from San Diego State University where he was active with the Scripps Institute of Oceanography. Shortly after graduation, he relocated to Boston Massachusetts and became an educator for an organization called Ocean Quest. Ocean Quest was responsible for the implementation of marine science curriculum at outdoor science camps. In addition, they ran a research vessel out of Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute and introduced groups to physical and chemical oceanography on educational cruises through the harbor. Returning home to California, Joel was offered a position at the Aquarium of the Pacific in Long Beach. There he held a position as an education specialist for four years before taking a director position with the Long Beach Marine Institute, where he returned to his roots as an outdoor marine science educator. Now Joel, along with an amazing team of education specialists, has the opportunity to create the ultimate outdoor island experience on Catalina Island with The Catalina Experience!
